I mapped out user workflows and goals, and created mockups and functional prototypes. Led internal design review meetings to gather feedback from stakeholders and iterate designs before handing off to developers for back-end integration. Once back-end was in place, I was responsible for refining front-end markup and interaction, and creating new stylesheets. I designed the layout for these pages with the user's goals in mind. Key information is easily located, and a short introduction is featured when available. All of the data on these pages is user-entered, and it was a challenge making sure the page remained balanced regardless of a given page elements dimensions or even presence. I also made sure to maintain site security by escaping user input before rendering. SEO was also important for these pages. Semantic markup does most of the heavy lifting, and some microformat data is included as well. Facebook and Twitter sharing is also integrated. I worked closely with Dru to figure out exactly what functionality she wanted, then built a custom back end CMS that presents only those few features in the most intuitive way possible. The site has the ability to show multiple portfolios, and both portfolio order and photo order within an individual portfolio can be rearranged via drag and drop. New posts can be created and edited, and static About and Contact pages can be updated as well. The site was built using Ruby on Rails and is hosted on Heroku. Also, their previous hosting hadn't included database access, severely limiting how much we could we do with it. With the new site, I started from scratch, writing everything in Ruby on Rails, and hosting it on Heroku. Albums, users, songs, shows, and forum topics all became their own models, allowing for a much deeper experience across the site. Users have central accounts that they can use to post in the forum, comment on shows, and even add and edit setlists. Users can also log in with Facebook if they prefer. Tour dates and ticket links are automatically updated via the Bandsintown API and Sub Pop's handy RSS feeds. I strove for a simple, highly usable design that puts the focus where it should be: on the band and their fans. I used the just-launched Google Font Directory to incorporate the awesomely-named Vollkorn webfont for all headings, and incorporated subtle shades of red, black, grey, and tan to match the new album's artwork. Commerce is handled via Topspin, and images are served via Amazon's Cloudfront CDN. I worked with Google's just-launched YouTube Direct platform, which incorporates their App Engine Java SDK and the YouTube API, to build a simple, usable interface that reflected the director's minimal aesthetic. Users log in with their YouTube account and can either upload a new video or submit a previously uploaded video from their account.
