For this author's site, I went with a clean, simple layout that places the writing front and center whilst incorporating the client's own design elements (the spraypainted menu, for example). Built from scratch in Ruby on Rails, including a custom CMS. jQuery is used for photo lightbox effects. All images hosted on Amazon's CloudFront CDN.
